Colorado is a state that will always have a special place in our hearts. Other than having a blast doing all of the winter activities, we also got engaged on our first visit back in 2017! We’ve only visited Colorado in the winter, so all of our activities are geared towards what we’ve experienced and not necessarily everything the state has to offer for other seasons.
Depending on how you set up your itinerary, you can have a fun filled adventure or a peaceful getaway. There are scenic views at nearly every turn through the Rockies and a few really good restaurants in some of the smallest towns you’ll ever visit!

Colorado is a winter’s paradise and we recommend it for everybody! Other than all of the activities and beautiful scenery, we believe Colorado also has a very underrated food scene. As we mentioned, we’ve only ever visited Colorado in the winter, so on our next trip, we would like to experience Colorado in the Fall. Whitewater rafting, wildlife viewing and hiking Rocky Mountain National Park are all very high on our list of things to do.
Before you ask: you might have noticed Rocky Mountain National Park on our list with all of the winter activities… Yes, we did wander into the park in Winter! There was nobody there and it was absolutely beautiful! Most of the roads were closed due to snow, so we would only recommend a Rocky Mountain National Park winter visit if you are already staying in the area and just want a short, picturesque joy ride. If you have any questions about planning a trip to Colorado, don’t hesitate to contact us – we really would be happy to help!
Favorite Memory – On our first ever snow trip out to Colorado, we got engaged!
Accommodations – Colorado snow towns have beautiful ski resorts and some chain hotels, but our favorite way to stay is to rent out an A-frame cabin. We usually travel to Colorado with friends or family and we’ve found that splitting the cost of a cabin can allow you to stay at an amazing place for less than the price of a hotel.
Food – Colorado doesn’t have a reputation for being a food hot spot, but we’ve found some really great restaurants during our travels. If dining out isn’t for you, every ski town we’ve been to has had either a City Market or Safeway where you can buy groceries to cook your own meals, but we rarely have time to cook and clean full meals on our trip. These are some of our absolute favorite spots in Colorado:
Hernando’s Pizza Pub- Grand Lake
Sage Brush BBQ – Grand Lake
Syrup – Denver
Denver Biscuit Company – Denver
The Canteen – Breckenridge
Roadhouse Bar and Grill – Grand Lake
Transportation – Most towns offering winter activities are at least an hour and a half away from Denver. We’ve rented a car at Denver International Airport on all of our trips to Colorado because we enjoy having the freedom to explore; however, there are shuttle services that can take you from Denver out to some of the popular snow towns like Breckenridge.
