New York

When we started dating back in 2013, Jenn was always trying to get me to go to New York. Being from Florida, I liked going to theme parks, but I really wasn’t much of a traveler. It wasn’t until we got married in April 2019 and went on our honeymoon across the West Coast, that traveling really grew on me. By grew on me, I mean I became obsessed (thanks, Yosemite!). So, later that year, for Christmas, I decided to surprise Jenn by planning a trip to New York!

I wrapped a miniature Empire State Building in wrapping paper and when she opened it, she realized we were going to New York! She was already ecstatic – crying like usual, but there was still another surprise! Inside the Empire State building were 2 tickets to see her favorite band, The Strokes, on New Years Eve. It was the first trip I planned by myself for Jenn and I, and I’ll probably spend the rest of my life trying to top that as a Christmas gift!

New York is a place that can be overwhelming if you don’t put some thought into planning out your trip. There are so many things to see and do (and eat!) that it’s impossible to fit everything you want to do into one trip. Overall, we have taken 2 trips to New York together, and because we loaded our itineraries both times, we have seen quite a bit. We definitely encourage you to reach out to us if you need help planning a trip to New York, Jenn has been many times and she can really help you get the most out of your trip!.

Things to See and Do in New York

Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
Summit One Vanderbilt
Eat Pizza
Rockefeller Christmas Tree
Central Park
American Museum of Natural History
DUMBO
Times Square
St. Patrick's Cathedral

“DUMBO”

“Washington Square Park”

While there’s no shortage of things to do in New York, we definitely think New York is best suited for the outgoing extroverts who enjoy city life. If you like nature, or don’t do well in crowds, New York is probably not for you. If you still want to visit anyway, your best bet is to avoid the busy seasons like around Christmas and New Years.

On our next trip, we would like to spend more time exploring Ellis Island and the American Museum of Natural History; these places are so cool to us but we haven’t felt like we gave them quite enough time because we’re usually on our way to catch the next attraction. We also want to see The National September 11 Memorial Museum. Have you been to the big apple? Let us know your favorite pizza and what things you like to do in New York!!

Favorite Memory – Seeing Jenn’s favorite band, The Strokes, at Barclays Center!

Logistics

AccommodationsWe prefer staying close to a train station in the city. We got a great deal at The Wagner Hotel in Battery Park – it is temporarily closed right now, but it is in a safe and quiet part of the city. It used to be a Ritz Carlton and we got it for $175 per night through the week of New Years.

FoodNY pizza is a big deal and Ryan tries to eat as much of it as possible. We would suggest trying a few spots on Bleeker street; we especially loved John’s of Bleecker Street. In New York, you’ll have the biggest range of foods at your disposal. From street carts to fine dining, you’re not going to have any shortage of options in New York. Our only problem with New York food is that there is way too much to try it all.

  • John’s of Bleecker Street (New York, NY)
  • Levain Bakery (New York, NY)
  • Didi’s Dumplings (New York, NY)
  • Louie’s (Queens, NY)

TransportationUse city transportation; there is no need for a car if you are staying in the city. You’ll waste time driving and money on parking. We travel by Uber and the subway when we’re in New York.

Quick Tips

1
Food Don’t eat at chains in New York - try something that is unique to the area!
2
Safety Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings in the subway and around the city. Crime has been going up recently in New York, but you can still travel around safely if you pay attention. This means that you need to save the Instagram and TikTok scrolling for the hotel and just look around while you’re out walking or using public transportation.
3
Activity You’re not going to have trouble figuring out what to do in New York but you’ll probably have a hard time figuring out what you’ll need to skip! If you’re creating your itinerary and want our feedback on narrowing down your list, just reach out and ask - we’ll be happy to help!
4
Logistics Start planning early so that you can be flexible with your dates. If you’re traveling around Christmas time, prices will be at a premium, so your best bet is to track rates and book well in advance if you see a good deal available.
